The Cacti currently known to contain measurable amounts of psychoactive alkaloids such as phenethylamines or THIQs are listed below by Genus. Descriptions, botanical, natural habitats, traditional uses and other information for each species of that Genus is included as available. A large number of these Cacti also contain many other useful compounds such as steroids and terpenes, along with the better known constiuents. All stated percentages of contained alkaloids are by dry weight.
It is quite difficult to give an accurate verbal description of a Cactus as variations in color and subtle differences in appearance are obvious when seen in person but almost impossible to describe. Therefore only basic descriptions will be given, it is up to the reader to consult a publication with full color photographs for positive identification and more information.
This guide is divided into sections dealing with each Genus of Cacti known to contain psychoactive alkaloids. Each Genus is broken down into its seperate species.
