Chord progression analysis and synthesis
From a collection of chord progressions are deduced the root motion and chord type transition rules.
These rules are then used to generate new chord progressions.
By using songs that have common stylistic characteristics one can generate progressions that resemble those styles. By choosing data from songs in radically diverse styles one can bias the program to generate weird or unexpected progressions that still seem to have an underlying harmonic coherence.
The "Order of Transition" parameter determines how freely or slavishly the program will follow the rules implied by the song data. Order 1 is the loosest, and order 4 the most rigid.
The Root order will determine the degree of tonality or diatonicity,
the Chord order will determine the coherence of the harmonic language.
Including predominantly chromatic progressions or modulation formulas in the progression data will tend produce rather atonal, chromatic or "unusual" results. Jazz progressions that make extensive use of altered chords will also yield novel results.
Exploration of hypothetical branches of musical history is also possible: by combining progressions from Gregorian Chants with Acid Rock progressions, one might answer the question: "what would have happened if 12th century Catholic monks had access to electric guitars?"
This is a totally reductionist approach to writing chord progressions, but it is somewhat interesting, especially if you feed in a bunch of your own songs. It's also good for exploring the unexpected possiblities implied by certain styles or songwriters. The program just cranks them out; one has to scan for interesting fragments, and then put them in an appropriate musical context, modify promising segments toward ones own purposes, use them to stimulate ones musical sensibilities, induce artificial culture shock, or explore eccentric new harmonic languages.
