A Speedy SubstanceAlphamethyltryp Substances: AMT In my quest for researching some of the more obscure tryptamine compounds I acquired a small sample of dl-alpha-methyltryptamine for tasting. There seems to be a limited amount of information regarding this psychoactive substance with several positive accounts circulating amungst the literature. In one report it stated that 20mg orally was the standard dosage and method of ingestion. However, another report indicated that 5-10mg snorted or vaporized provided a similar experience with a much faster onset. I have not seen any information that indicates the difference between D or L forms of this compound, but I would assume that like many other substances (l-LSD for example) the L form of alpha-methyltryptamine would be inactive. For my first test I decided to vaporize 8mg of the dl-alpha-methyltryptamine figuring that it was probably only half the potency of the pure D form. It had the typical indole taste and smell, but it was a distinctive flavor. As I inhaled the vapor I noticed an uncomfortable pressure rising in my head that reminded me of a threshold dose of 5meo. I sat back and watched with with my eyes open noticing a slight visual alteration and color brightening. This progressed to a sense of stimulation and I got up to continue my work outside. There was a general uneasiness in my body for the first half hour which seemed to gradually subside as the effects continued. The stimulated alteration was very subtle and could have been compared to a very strong cup of coffee with a dash of cayenne pepper. This continued for several hours and began to decline by the 6 hour point. The timing felt right so I decided to vaporize another 20mg in order to manifest the full psychedelic effect of this substance. I inhaled several hits from my vaporizer and sat back. This time the head pressure and uneasiness was more pronounced but the visual effect was about the same as before. Suddenly I became very fast. I have never taken amphetamines before, but this is what I'd imagine they're like. My mind was moving fast, and my body was speeding along with it in an unconscious way. In fact, it seemed like I was functioning in a much more stressful and higher brainwave state (in terms of frequency) than I usually enjoy at baseline. I was totally beta... I had been feeling a bit uneasy in my intestines all day so I decided that a colonic might be helpful to alleviate the discomfort. I raced around and gathered all the necessary supplies and prepared "The Bucket" for a good internal cleanse. After thoroughly cleaning my colon I felt wonderfully clear and much relieved from the physical distress. Without haste I cleaned up and started preparing the music for our evening breathwork session as I'm the DJ for the process. I was running around tossing CD's into my box, pulling out tapes, swiftly turning knobs and pushing buttons. I felt like Mrs. Howell on radioactive sugar beets (for all you Gilligan's Island kids). Onward with the show... I spun the breathwork tunes and got into some heavy tribal drumming which was quite perfect for the AMT state. I found myself beating my hands against my knees and frantically playing the sound booth tables like a drum. 5 hours since the 20mg vapor hits I began to notice more of a psychedelic effect beginning to manifest. It seemed as if the speedy part was becoming less predominant and the psychedelic visual effects were starting to kick in. I went back to my room to watch the distinctive waves of a soft red/orange visuals. They were similar to the fluid nature of the mushroom but with the archetype patterning and colors of LSD. It gradually increased to a level of intensity similar to perhaps .5 to 1g of P. cubensis, and after several hours it was clear that I had reached the plateau. Feeling fairly tired and ready for bed decided to call it a night. Quite to my surprise when I awoke 4 hours later I was at the same level effects as when I went to sleep. Gradually over the next day I returned to baseline and I was left feeling quite euphoric with a pleasant afterglow. After my first initial experiment with this compound I have to say that I'm not really excited by it. It's speedy effects seem to enhance the egoic sense rather than to dissolve it like some of the more traditional entheogens. For me, it's almost as if AMT has a split personality, with it's psychedelic aspect not being strong enough to overpower it's basic amphetamine nature and carry me into the realms of hyperspace. I'm not sure whether I will try it again, it just didn't feel like a very good fit for me. I would certainly like to get some other opinions, and I plan to forward samples to several colleagues for more thorough and diverse discussion of the subject.
