Chemical and metabolic precursor to GHB

Lactone (inter-molecular ester) of g-hydroxybutyric acid. Colorless oily liquid at room temperature. Can be reacted with suitable bases to form GHB, in the following proportions per 120 mL lactone:

63 g NaOH
91 g KOH
132 g NaHCO₃

Melting Point	-45° C
Boiling Point	204-205° C
Solubility	Miscible with water. Soluble in DMSO, 95% ethanol, methanol, acetone
