Chemical and metabolic precursor to GHB

Lactone (inter-molecular ester) of g-hydroxybutyric acid. Colorless oily liquid at room temperature. Can be reacted with suitable bases to form GHB, in the following proportions per 120 mL lactone:
  • 63 g NaOH
  • 91 g KOH
  • 132 g NaHCO3
