MAOI stands for monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Monoamine oxidase
metabolizes serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine; an MAOI inhibits this
action. They are used clinically as anti-depressants, and recreationally
to increase the power of hallucinogens.
