To me, part of freeing you mind is the feeling > of not being in control. While in college (late 70's), I read about a tribe of natives called the Senoi in Borneo or some such place. The neighboring tribes fear them as wizards and as having maagic powers. What was unique about the Senoi was the fact that their culture was based on lucid dreaming. In their philosophy, man lived in two worlds: the waking world where he was weak; and the dream world where he had power and magic. Each morning at breakfast, the family discussed their dreams from the night before, with the adults helping the children interpret their dreams as a means of gaining control of the dreaming experience. One example I remember was the falling dream. This was a fortuitous dream for a child, because falling was considered the first step towards flying. Once the child learned to fly in his dream, he would be able to go other places and see things such as game and what was happening with distant relatives and tribes. Some other examples that come to mind: Sex with family members was permitted in dreams because the incest taboo did not apply to the spirits who merely came in the form of relatives. Making love to such images, or conquering an enemy in a dream, was considered to be a means of gaining power. Once the love or martial conquest was completed, the victor was entitled to a song or vision from the subject of the conquest. These revelations was shared with the family at the morning meal, and the heads of the family would then share them with the leaders of the tribe. You know, I haven't though about the Senoi for quite a while, and I'm curious to see what is available on the net. I'll let you know if I come up with anything interesting.
