Stack 2 lids, one on top of the other.  Stick a thumb tack through the center of both lids.  Drill them out to ~1/4".  Place 1/2 a cotton ball over between the 2 lids. You could do this to make any number of ports that will fit. Use as usual. Don't shake hard enough for the substrate you hit the cotton, roll on the bottom edge if need be.

nice! I used to pull a cotton ball through a pin hole in a single lid, but that looks much cleaner. no problems caused with the rim sealing tight from two lids? whats your preference on cotton balls - real cotton or poly whatever?

this same tek can be used with pre-purchased filters as well and works great to minimize area of the filter exposed to the spawning material because they tend to get a little icky and discolored after repeated use.  the only thing is that unless the holes are perfectly centered, the bottom lid's needs to be a bit bigger than the top lid's.

I use cotton balls from the dollar store, I'd imagine the poly might be better if it is non-nutritive. I have only done this on one set tbh.  It was simple and worked so I posted it. There is probably lots of room for improvement, folded fiber-glass sheets would probably work good.

I am not sure what you mean about rim sealing.  If you mean do they stick together, they didn't, but if you tighten the band too much they might, I don't know.  I just snug them.

Ok, after reusing them I have decided that the exposed steel around the holes should be covered with a thin layer of liquid teflon to prevent rusting.  It doesn't seem to cause any problems, but the condensated water drags some of the rust down into the substrate and has an appearance similar to the red from bacterial contaminates in popcorn.  I imagine reusing the rusted lids will get worse with each use.  Silicone should work aswell, but it doesn't like to stick to the white underside very well.
