it may be helpful if authors of posts had unlimited time to modify posts, rather than them being locked at some point

Provided the thread isn't itself locked edits should be abe to be made almost indefinitely. The last edited time stamp is mainly to keep trolls from going back and changing their posts so they "weren't wrong" and similar stuff.
Once a thread is locked no changes can be made.

I think I've actually had this happen as well. Thread posts are always editable, but on occasion (*i think*) the modify button on the topic post goes away. While this might have been a result of intoxicated posting, I seem to have remembered it happening.

Like stated above, that is a logical possibility, when the thread is locked.

Here is what I am looking at (see att.) there is no modify button. There used to be, but not anymore.

The first time i noticed this was a year or two ago. I just figured it was some kind of prevention so that posts wouldn't be edited on top of replies. It doesn't matter much to me, it just caught my attention as the mods don't seem to know about it.

Actually, now that you mention it... there was a time when the settings were changed. This was because we had a few members that suddenly editet their posts to nil. We had a discussion on this and decided that there is no real need for editing a post after a while and we changed it to this setting now. Sorry, I missed that as the setting don't apply to me.

Personally, I edit my posts if I feel the need to add something that I don't think requires a new post of it's own, or in the case of a spelling/grammar mistake.
If there is anything you feel the need to edit, ask a mod, and if they think it's reasonable I'm sure it will be done.
