Disclaimer:  I don't read much Smiley

I am not trying to suggest a book for the book club, but I just read a book called "Into Thin Air" by John Krakauer, the aurthor of "Into the Wild".  It was absolutely amazing.  It is a true story about tragedy on a Mt Everest expedition and the author was there to witness the events.  I believe it was his first book.

What really struck me about this book, is what humans can endure in unralistic conditions for an unrealistic amount of time in the harshest conditions on the planet.  Also the indifference humans can have towards others lives, and how some will chose a different path.  The chaos that ensues with a high end expedition led by the best climbers in the world is also quite amazing.

The author is extremely candid about how his own actions effected the lives of others.  This is really rare given the ego that drives most authors.

Great book and I highly recommend it.

"Post Office" by Bukowski

Mimsy are trying to turn the Lycaeum into a bunch of alcoholics?  grin Good choice, thats been on my "to read" list for a while. So far we have,

"Post Office" by Bukowski
"A Heart of Darkness" or "The Secret Agent" by Conrad.
Some Kurt Vonnegut novel.
"American Gods" by  Neil Gaiman.

Keep 'em coming or bring up ones that were suggested for previous months.

Yeah Krakauer does great work. Any one read "Under the Banner of Heaven"? Its about the Mormons, some wild shit.

OK, just to clear this up a little -

Let's say Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut.

From the Camus thread,

Quote
I think we will keep this schedule for the LBC. First 10 days of the month we finalize the book for that month and start discussion of the previous months book on the 10th as well.

The picking of the next book should be ongoing throughout the month but I think we should try to pick them by the end of the month if possible but up to the 10th if need be and book discussion be from the 10th to whenever. With any luck good book may require months of discussion grin Each book of course having its own thread.

What do y'all think?

 shocked Whooooaaattt?

I thought "discussion" starts 1st Oct.?! (For which I'm already fashionably late by 8 days, in a cool sort of not really trying, laid back kind of way cool). I'll just crawl back then into my cave and continue my hibernation cycle, wherein I meditate/dream of the similarities between unicorns, flawless pairs of breasts, and US health care (very spiritually rewarding btw, more so than any literature in this mediocre universe; present interdimensional company, its literature, and breasts excluded of course).

Well I finished the Plague weeks ago, and now we're in October without an October book! By the time we get an October book and I've ordered it from the library and got it from the library and read it, it'll be late November....and there'll be no November book! If this goes on we'll be reading friggin Decembers book in March!  grin

Have we actually discussed a book yet?

O.k. It looks like Vonnegut or Gaiman. We need tie breaker, and y'all should be able to change your votes if ya want to. I figure we'll just run from the 10th to the 10th unless we wind up picking a short novel wink

I will reply with some constructive criticism: how about only giving those members a vote that actually comment, meaning actually post what they think about a book instead of merely obeying the imperatives of looking cool and not offending?

Speaking about books, art, music etc. is always in a way "exposing oneself and one's ignorance". If people just come here and vote without real participation, then I'll be honest, that's fucking lame because some members seem to want to make an honest effort to participate, sacrifice their time by actually reading the books and taking notes and shit, and others just waltz in and get to control that wonderful process with no contribution whatsoever other than an obvious sense of their own greatness.

I mean c'mon, people. Everybody walks in here and knows what to read but nobody actually talks about their reading.

Mimos,
I wasn't offended. The truth is, the general air of annoyance I carry with me is a shield to avoid making friends and getting into complex relationships so that I can sit at the computer and play poker, watch porn, eat tacos and troll around in Forums all day. It's just my general life's strategy, nothing personal, man grin. I was actually attacking the lack of balls and titts in this thread as nobody simply says what they think about their reads, which contrary to discussions in a science context, is precisely what one wants. We're dealing with the ENTIRE human imagination and not some specialized subset of it where there are only right or wrong answers or relevant and irrelevant answers, locked in specific domains that you must know intimately to participate in a discussion; and if you don't know these domains then you are a fucking charlatan, lol. This attitude has always baffled me. People read the summaries, the cliff notes, the spark notes, but much more interesting is how a living, breathing, thinking human responds to a book without considerations towards "the official interpretation". If you can keep obsessive egos out of the discussion, then the stage is set for a richly moving, soulful exchange and sharing between minds.

Fool jumps from his soapbox, vomits violently, and mutters: "All for good measure..." smiley

Please vote quickly so we can get this one going.

I'm in, but hows this work? Discuss in November, read in October? We need clear guidelines at the beginning of this and the discussion thread.

Here's my proposal - I suspect it's pretty much what is going now, but going through this thread it is unclear.

(This) Poll thread exists for next month's book, taking suggestions as they are added. Is it possible to leave the runners up on the poll so they roll over? Change the title of this thread to "Lycaeum Book Club Suggestions" or something to that effect. From the title I thought we were having a poll if we should have a book club.

New discussion thread for each book - discussion and reading happen concurrently, starting as soon as the month's book is chosen, and last indefinitely, so you're never too late to the party, and no getting behind. You can discuss whenever, but the first line of the post should have the page you are on, or have "completed", preferably bolded up, so someone can scan through the thread and avoid spoilers.

I think this would clear up the concurrent discussion/reading issues and confusion. For me at least Wink

*edit - never mind. it's not that confusing.

We've been banging around in the philosophy and sorta-sci-fi genres. Let's take a completely different tack.

History         Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

or a Comedy  (insert name here)

or well known Classic Literature  (insert name here)

or any other suggestion will do grin

And we discuss Sirens of Titan after November 11, correct?
