Originally Coca-Cola was an energizing tonic based on the cola nut (Cola nitida) and coca leaf (Erythroxylum coca). The modern product unfortunately bears little resemblance to the original intent. So one thought it would be fun to create a beverage closer to what the original would have been like...

Ingredients:
Coca tea (3 bags)
Cola nut (1 cup)
Agave nectar
Sparkling mineral water of your choice

Directions:
Chop a cup of cola nuts and simmer on low heat for a couple hours, until it is reduced substantially in volume. Open up the bags of coca tea and add them, let simmer gently for fifteen more minutes. Then turn of the heat, cover and let sit overnight. This makes the coca-cola base. The thicker and more concentrated it is, the better.

In the morning, strain the liquid and place in the fridge until cool.

To create the beverage, fill a cup 1/4 to 1/3 full of the coca-cola base, and add a spoonful or so of agave nectar to sweeten to taste. Fill the rest of the way up with sparkling mineral water, stir, and enjoy! The beverage provides a pretty noticeable jolt of energy. If you want to kick it up another notch, stir in a teaspoon of guarana powder. This is a tasty addition to the beverage.  cool

Well it's too bad I don't have any of this stuff.  And are you sure they were not adding some coca leaf extracts in it as well?

Possibly. I know that nowadays they add a decocainized coca-leaf extract for flavour. Leading to the obvious question: What do they do with all the cocaine that's removed? Cola nut can be had for cheap off the net, and there are coca tea isn't TOO hard to track down either. Small Mexican or S. American import shops sometimes carry it, or there are websites that will ship it. Customs usually doesn't look inside your box of tea, and even if they did, would probably not make the connection between coca leaf tea and cocaine. It looks pretty innocent. For agave nectar, check a local natural foods/organic market if you have one, or substitute another sweetener  smiley

sounds good Papy,

just for kicks - have you kept track of the costs of doing this?

I'm all for the idea of good stuff costing more up to a point

I'm pretty sure the industrial process used to crank out the Coke isn't all that "regular"(having a brainfart right now, need a better word). I'm sure I can taste the differences in batches.

The best part of your idea is the knowing there are no preservatives or other stuff in the drink. Reading labels anymore can give a guy a righteous paranoia .............. Coca tea @ $10/box of 20 bags, so the Coca going into this recipe = $1.50
Cola nut, got a pound for around $8 and used maybe a quarter of it, so = $2.00
Agave nectar, $8/500 mL, using only a teaspoon full barely counts, so = a few cents
The mineral water itself was the most expensive part. Three litres cost something like $4.00. You could go with a cheaper brand if desired.
Guarana powder: something like $8/pound also, so a few cents for guarana

So three liters costs less than $8.

A two litre bottle of younamethebeverage can be had for two bucks in gas stations hereabouts. But it is what it is.

$2.75 doesn't sound too bad for something of quality.

Recently saw an episode of Alton Brown's Good Eats where he made his own ginger ale. Aside from a slightly time consuming candying of some giinger chips he was cranking out "the worlds finest soft drink" for about the same cost as yours.  IIRC the recipe was as simple as candied ginger + cane sugar+ sparkling water. UMMMMM sugar!

its actually used to supply all the "medical" cocaine in the united states. i love when you put the term medical before an illegal substance it suddenly becomes a completely different thing in the eyes of bureaucracy cheesy

Hmmmmm

in the old days you could drink Coke and you'd get the cocaine

now you drink the Coke and somebody else gets it.

Somehow that's a cosmic upset. smiley
